Ensuring Effective Communication with Clients Who are Hard of Hearing

This continuing education course discusses the statistics and impacts of untreated hearing loss. Helps equips professionals with the knowledge and skills to communicate effectively and compassionately with clients who have mild to moderate hearing loss with or without low vision/blindness. Through a blend of practical strategies and applied knowledge, participants will learn how to identify and adapt information-delivery methods to prevent misunderstandings, ensure informed consent, and support compliance with instructions.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify, assess and change information delivery options when miscommunications could be a factor or result of hearing loss, to prevent lack of informed consent or compliance with instructions.
- Be aware of the controllable elements of providing best options for effective communications for anyone, but especially for those with mild to moderate hearing loss who do not prefer or know ASL.
- To help staff and self to build skills/compassion to address fear/avoidance of people who are loud or often reacting to what they thought they heard.
- Be able to understand culturally appropriate use of assistive technology, communication cards, helpful apps, and access a list of qualified health care interpreters and other options when interpreters are requested or best means of clear communication.

Beyond the Surface: Infection Control That Actually Works

- Describe the essential components of a dental Infection Control Plan and explain how to implement and maintain required OSHA and CDC infection prevention standards.
- Identify exposure risks related to bloodborne and airborne pathogens and apply appropriate prevention strategies, including sharps safety and safe injection practices.
- Demonstrate proper hand hygiene techniques and recognize when to use soap and water versus alcohol-based hand rubs in dental settings.
- Select and properly use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and recognize how to prevent contact dermatitis and latex allergy reactions in the dental workplace.
- Describe correct procedures for cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing instruments and devices, and understand biological, chemical, and mechanical monitoring requirements.
- Explain dental unit waterline (DUWL) management requirements, including water quality standards, monitoring methods, and treatment protocols to prevent Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs).
