Dental Care for Cancer Patients:
Pretreatment suggestions:

1-Visit dentist for judicious restorative dental treatment and periodontal treatment, and extractions of questionable teeth

2-Have the dentist construct a dental tray for the delivery of NEUTRAL FLUORIDE RX GRADE to help prevent future dental caries. (Bought from your dentist)

3-Begin using a remineralization paste MI Paste Plus (usually about $15 from your dentist)

       A-Alternatives: Rx for high fl toothpaste 1.1% neutral NAF (approx cost $12.00) use as toothpaste 3x/day
 
During treatment:

1-Continue Fluoride treatments daily

CAUTION: DO NOT USE ACID BASED FLUORIDES!

2-Begin CloSys mouthwash helps minimize bacterial growth and yeast infections (approx cost $13.00)

a- Alternative :1 teaspoon salt+ 1 teaspoon baking soda in one large glass warm water... rinse and swish to keep mouth clean and bacteria controlled. The baking soda neutralizes the acid formed from bacteria that attacks the teeth.

CAUTION: DO NOT USE ALCOHOL BASED MOUTHWASH!


3-Continue MI paste... this helps lubricate the mouth while at the same time provides the minerals to help the teeth while the saliva not functioning

4-Treatment of mouth sores; orabase with local anesthetic provides local relief of pain while protecting the sore(approx. cost between $5.00-$7.50)

a-Alternatives Orajel, Ambesol, (approx. cost $6.00 - $8.00 )

5-Dry mouth treatment Biotene Dry Mouth Paste helps lubricate mouth and provides some enzymes that are normally provided by saliva  (approx. cost $7-$8)

a-Alternatives: OraMoist tablets  provide long lasting xylitol which stimulates saliva and inhibits bacterial growth (approx. cost $11)

b. xylitol mints, gum, or spray found in all pharmacies in the diabetes section these helps with dry mouth and inhibits bacterial growth

 
Post-treatment suggestions:

1- frequent recall at dentist to find early dental problems

2- Neutral fluoride applications with home trays

3- continued use of MI Paste to help in mouth lubrication and provide ca++ for tooth health

4- CloSys mouthwash to inhibit bacteria and yeast to help prevent infections

5- Use xylitol products to stimulate saliva and inhibit bacterial growth

CAUTION: DO NOT USE SUGAR CANDY WHICH IS THE FOOD FOR THE BACTERIA THAT CAUSE DENTAL DECAY
