The 'Big Check' - Dec. 9, 2005 (Wilsonville) - ODA President Weston W. Heringer, Jr., DMD gratefully accepted a $500,000 check donated by The ODS Companies during the Executive Committee's December 9, 2005 meeting. "Thank you very much for everything you do for the Oregon Dental Association," Heringer said. "We truly do appreciate it." President and CEO Robert G. Gootee and Board Chair Michael L. McKeel, DMD offered the funds on behalf of the ODS Board of Directors. Gootee explained that the money was earmarked to offset the increased costs of materials that had recently weighed down the ODA's Wilsonville building project. "We want this building to represent the dental professional with pride," said Gootee. "We didn't want the price of cement and steel to compromise your vision." According to Project Manager David Aaroe of Fortis Construction, the increases in cement and steel prices were caused in large part by overseas construction projects--specifically in China--acquiring 82 percent of those materials produced in the U.S. Meanwhile, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the additional fill material needed to stabilize the building site were also factors in the cost overruns.
