Medical Teams International: At Home and Abroad
This session is presented by volunteers and staff of Medical Teams International (formerly Northwest Medical Teams) to describe the unmet need and logistics of volunteering as a dental professional both at home and abroad. Medical Teams International implements and supports programs that address the causes and effects of inadequate health care, particularly among populations affected by disaster, conflict, and poverty.
Medical Teams International meets peoples’ needs through humanitarian aid and disaster relief regardless of their race, gender, or religion. Programs include training and education to build the capability and capacity of partners, volunteers, staff, and people served in order to produce sustainable change. Medical Teams International’s philosophical approach is holistic and seeks to address the wellness of the whole person—a physical, social, mental, and spiritual being.
At the conclusion of this course, attendees will:
Comprehend the similarities, differences, and scope of unmet dental needs at home and abroad,
Know how to apply their dental skills in volunteer settings to help address those unmet needs,
Understand the steps required to begin volunteering and the types of equipment, supplies, and logistical support provided by Medical Teams International, and
Be motivated to use their skills and abilities to make a difference in the lives of the dentally underserved
