1. Verbiage: The Power of Storytelling

This course will introduce participants to an understanding of how storytelling can positively impact the outcome of a young patient visit. With increased recognition of the importance of the Age 1 – First Dental Visit, it is expected that more general dentists will be in a unique position to examine young children of their current adult patients and families or use the familial relationship to recommend visiting a pediatric dentist. A thorough understanding of child development and abilities is necessary then for a positive dental experience, and the role of storytelling can be a strong tool in the dental chair.

At the conclusion of this course, attendees will be able to identify the appropriate behavioral limitations of children at various ages, know how to take every day topics and transition them into a story for young patients, and be able to identify when a young patient has reached their limit.

2. Parent Perceptions: “But they’re just baby teeth!”

This course will address common misperceptions the public has regarding the purpose of primary teeth and early childhood caries and its causes. With increased recognition of the importance of the Age 1 – First Dental Visit, it is expected that more general dentists will be in a unique position to examine young children of their current adult patients and families or use the familial relationship to recommend visiting a pediatric dentist. A thorough understanding of early treatment and intervention is necessary to decrease the occurrence of childhood caries.

At the conclusion of this course, attendees will be able to provide current clinical information to parents in their practice of the importance of the Age 1 – First Dental Visit and increase treatment case acceptance for children with treatment needs.
