Comprehensive Evalaution and Team Care for Cleft and Craniofacial Patients

 

The course will outline a comprehensive course of care for cleft lip and palate and craniofacial patients from diagnosis on ultrasound to teenage years.  It will include discussion regarding prenatal care, prenatal diagnosis, and counseling for families prior to the birth of the baby.  It will discuss aspects of surgical care of cleft lip and palate and will touch on topics for surgical care of craniofacial patients.  A special emphasis will be placed on interdisciplinary care of these patients and utilization of teamwork for the care of these patients.  There will be discussions regarding different roles that various dental and other specialties have in the care of cleft and craniofacial patients.

At the conclusion of this course, attendees will be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of prenatal diagnosis and prenatal counseling for families with children with cleft and other facial anomalies
  • Recognize an relate the necessity of interdisciplinary team care for children with cleft and other facial deformities
  • Understand the nature of surgical procedures associated with cleft and other facial deformities
  • Understand the vital role that dentistry takes in the care of children with orofacial anomalies

 

Dr. Smith completed his Doctorate of Dental Surgery at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry in 1988 and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at The University of Texas-Houston in 1993. Interest in cleft lip and palate care sparked entrance into a cleft and craniofacial fellowship at The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. In September 1994, Dr. Smith was appointed assistant professor in Oral and Maxillofacial at the University of Oklahoma. Currently, Dr. Smith is a Clinical Professor and Residency Program Director. Additionally, he is Co-director of The University of Oklahoma J. W. Keys Cleft and Craniofacial Clinic and The University of Tulsa Mary K. Chapman Cleft and Craniofacial Clinic. Dr. Smith was awarded the Physician National FRIST Humanitarian Award by Health Care Corporation of America in 2009 for his work with patients with Facial Differences.
