1. Oral-Systemic Health: Marketplace realities in Treating Oral Diseases

Periodontal disease and caries are opportunistic biofilms infections with implications for systemic health. The imperatives of Evidence Based Decision Making require us to take a fresh look at our clinical practices as science brings new information and guidelines. Insurance is a risk-based marketplace reality and influences our patients’ choices. Bridge the gap by using current and emerging science with modern information technology. Learn to be the authority on what matters most to your patients.

At the conclusion of this course, attendees will be able to:

  • Evaluate evidence on the potential association between oral disease and systemic health
  • Classify the steps of evidence based decisions
  • Define biofilm complexity
  • Enrich care by using a risk assessment tool to determine treatment options and referral
  • Describe medical necessity narratives to facilitate insurance benefit payment

2. Firm Footing On Shifting Ground: Don't Get Lost In Translation

Patient records are required to be digital by 2015. Electronic Health Records (EHR) will include patients' laboratory tests, medical, pharmacy, vision, dental, and other clinical information. Our method of documentation and information gathering will need to evolve. Communication with your patients can break down due to insufficient awareness of patient benefit plans, insurance codes, and the practice’s financial options. When the clinical and administrative team members lose the details in translation, there are no winners.

At the conclusion of this course, attendees will be able to:

  • Understand what EHR (electronic health record) will mean to their practice
  • Be aware of documentation with a diagnosis-driven component
  • Learn to create simple narratives to maximize coverage
  • Discern the implications of creative billing
