1. Transitioning Your Practice 

This course will help you develop strategies for planning and implementing a successful practice transition. It will highlight the most salient legal, accounting, financial planning and practical aspects of the transition, including: retirement needs assessment, finding the right buyer, practice valuation, taxation of practice and building sales, effective transaction documentation, and structuring the transition to meet financial objectives. Explore some of the nuances of a buy-in/ buy-out transition in contrast to a traditional sale. Discover how to build and use a professional team effectively. Learn when to sell, and what you need to know about the process. Take this opportunity to pose questions and get answers from a group of advisors who are on the front line of dental practice transitions in their respective professions on a daily basis.
2. Alternative Investments: Portfolio "Airbags" 

This course is designed to provide investors with a basic understanding of alternative investments and to explain how they can play an important role in a diversified investment portfolio. It is suitable for dentists, hygienists and office staff.

Course Topics:

  • What are alternative investments?
  • Are we in a Secular Bear Market and if so, how can alternative investments help?
  • What is “Absolute Return” and how is it different from other investment strategies?
  • Tactical vs. Strategic asset management.
  • What is non-correlation and why does it matter to an investor?
  • Are they available within my office retirement plan?

Alternative investments involve specific risks that may be greater than those associated with traditional investments and may have specific suitability requirements. Investors should carefully consider the special risks associated with alternative investments including, limited liquidity, tax considerations, increased expenses, potentially speculative investment strategies and different regulatory requirements before investing.


John Van Leeuwen, CFP  has 20 years of experience in financial planning. He completed his CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certificate in 1991 and has been serving the dental and medical community since 1994. John addresses proper debt repayment, the cross-point, the time value of money, how to avoid the typical roadblocks to financial independence and general retirement planning. He is also proficient at dispelling some of the common financial myths and sharing his 11 simple tips to financial success. He is a regular speaker at Oregon Health Sciences University School of Dentistry as well as at regional and national dental events.
