Clinical Systems for Success in Contemporary Practice

Today’s orthodontists use a variety of advanced systems to supplement their traditional diagnostic and treatment methods as they help their patients achieve optimal smiles. Expanding the practice services to include the most relevant therapies and equipment requires knowledge of both what is possible and what is purposeful to pursue. With the downward trend in today’s economy trimming most budgets, it becomes necessary even more important to carefully invest time and money in systems that work well and make a difference in everyday practice.

This presentation will focus on the consideration of the several clinical systems designed to enhance the care of orthodontic patients. With an emphasis on quality of care and clinical implementation, the discussion will include a review of soft tissue diode lasers, 3D CBCT Imaging, advanced Oral Hygiene measures, systematic photography and emergency protocols. In addition, a variety of clinical treatment systems will be shown including the latest research and practice methods for improved smile displays and finishing efficiency.

At the conclusion of this course, attendees will:

  • Be able to describe the importance of the correlation between the size of the teeth and the size of the dental arch
  • Recognize peridodontal limitations placed on the use of the dental laser
  • Understand when the use of dental laser in the various stages of orthodontic treatment can maximize treatment efficiency
  • Be able to differentiate between various dental laser features and how to select the one that best suits their personal preferences and needs
  • Understand how to apply three-dimensional imaging to patient diagnosis and treatment planning

He graduated OKU from the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry in 1987 with both his DMD and a MS in Oral Biology, and from Baylor’s Orthodontic Residency in 1989 with another Masters degree. In late-2008 he merged his practice into a state-of-the-art 24-chair orthodontic facility designed for the use of advanced treatment concepts like 3-D imaging, the use of TADs and the dental laser, and more. Dr. Waugh is also a teacher, both as an Assistant Professor of Orthodontics at The Medical College of Georgia and as a lecturer who speaks year-round on the use of the dental laser and on dental esthetics in orthodontics to universities and study clubs across the country. He teaches in-office laser courses with live patients and is a speaker at the World Clinical Laser Institute Super Symposium in San Diego every year. A Diplomate of the ABO, Dr. Waugh was president of his state AAO constituency and is a member of both The American College of Dentists and International College of Dentists.
