1. Emerging Diseases – Science & Reality 
This seminar explores new and altered diseases of importance to dental professionals such as bloodborne diseases, biofilm diseases, and very infectious respiratory, skin, droplet or airborne diseases. The link between oral and systemic health or infection is considered along with susceptibility factors and co-morbidities such as chronic conditions and allergies. Standard and transmission-based precautions along with work restrictions for dental workers are presented.

Learning Objectives:
• Review well-known infectious diseases
• Be able to explain current trends in infectious diseases
• Identify emerging disease risks of importance to dentistry
• Apply infection control strategies to usual and unusual disease risks

2. Is There Anything Interesting About OSHA & Infection Control?

This combined course covers OSHA-required training topics for ordinary and extraordinary situations. Infection Control is presented from the perspective of both employee and patient protection, based on current CDC Guidelines, State Dental Board regulations for Infection Control and OSHA regulations. Updates include training to screen patients for aerosol transmitted diseases (ATD’s). Clinical risks are discussed in the context of today’s changing pathogens, new settings and technology, and social trends. 

Learning Objectives:

Using personal and surface barriers, environmental asepsis, instrument sterilization and safe techniques, attendees will understand and have options to manage the following concerns:
• Biofilms
• Bloodborne diseases
• Contact diseases
• Airborne diseases
• Skin disorders, including allergies
• Current, immediate health concerns 


Nancy Andrews, RDH graduated from, and was a clinical instructor in Dental Hygiene at University of Southern California and teaches Oral Pathology, Preventive Dentistry and Infection Control at West Coast University Dept. of Dental Hygiene. She is a nationally recognized speaker, author and consultant, focusing on infectious diseases, clinical safety, instrument sharpening, ergonomics and preventive dentistry. Ms. Andrews is a “top 100 U.S. Speaker”, and is on the California Dental Assoc., ADA and OSAP speaker’s / Consultants bureaus. Ms. Andrews is an experienced author of journal articles, has contributed to textbook chapters and guidelines such as the 2009 ADA Infection Control Wall Poster, CE courses, newsletters, product literature and website content.
