A trio of varied topics in the area of oral and maxillofacial pathology of practical interest will be presented.
The course will explore the role that compounded medications may play in improving the outcome of mucosal disease management. It will consider the advantages and disadvantages of compounded medications and offer guidance in case selection. It will also present prescribing information for specific compounded medications for treatment of candidiasis and various forms of non-microbial mucositis.
Nodules and small masses are common findings in the oral cavity. Most commonly they represent reactive hyperplasias and less commonly they are neoplastic lesions. A clinical approach to the diagnosis of “lumps and bumps” of the oral cavity along with the clinical and microscopic features of common causes of these lesions will be presented.
The most common periradicular lesions of the jaws are inflammatory lesions representing reactions to infection and necrosis of the dental pulp. However, many other disease processes may develop within the jaws in juxtaposition to teeth. Emphasis will be on etiology, demographics, pathogenesis, radiographic features, treatment and prognosis of the various disease processes that may arise within the jaws.
Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to:
- discuss the advantages and disadvantages of compounded medications with a patient.
- identify patients for whom compounded medications should be considered.
- prescribe compounded medications for selected mucosal diseases.
- describe the clinical features of small masses of the mouth
- develop a reasonable differential diagnosis for small masses at different locations in the mouth.
- develop a logical classification scheme for intrabony odontogenic and non-odontogenic lesions that will assist in producing accurate differential diagnoses.
- recognize and describe radiographic characteristics for odontogenic and non-odontogenic diseases of the jaws.
- recognize variable patterns of expression by certain odontogenic and non-odontogenic diseases of the jaws.
- utilize clinical, radiographic and classification skills to develop useful differential diagnoses for common odontogenic and non-odontogenic diseases of the jaws.
- understand current concepts regarding etiology, pathogenesis, therapy and prognosis of odontogenic and non-odontogenic diseases of the jaws.
