A Modern Paradigm for Understanding and Managing Dental Caries

This course will supply dentists and staff with a practical way to implement protocol consistent with today’s scientific paradigm. Evidence-based dental research has taught us that caries is a process where demineralization (caused by acid from bacteria in the tooth bio film) exceeds remineralization. Without intervention, the net result is often cavitation. Filling the tooth at this point treats the hole not the disease, the demineralization process. In addition to restorative treatment, we must manage the dental caries disease process. This requires first understanding detection, classification and assessment of lesions, followed by integrating concepts of diagnosis, risk assessment and prognosis. Preventative and therapeutic options are considered as we cover fluorides, chlorhexidine rinse, Xylitol gum and MI paste as well as other modalities. A discussion of evidence-based dentistry and its practical application related to the changing ideas in dental caries is included.

At the conclusion of this course, attendees will be able to:

  • Explain the process of dental caries
  • Understand and be able to use ICDAS and CAMBRA tools
  • Recognize the difference between active and inactive white spot lesions
